Weekend Movies: Many to Choose From

[The trailer for the new Cohen Brothers' movie, "A Serious Man"]

It's a good weekend to go to the movies, according to The New York Time's film critic (and co-host of "At the Movies") A.O. Scott and Newsday's Rafer Guzman. They review "Zombieland," which stars Woody Harrelson; Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, "Whip It"; Michael Moore's "Capitalism: A Love Story"; Ricky Gervais' "The Invention of Lying"; and The Coen Brothers' latest, "A Serious Man."

    <!-- OPEN/TAKEAWAY QUESTION -->

<p>Tomorrow morning, the Labor Department releases its report on the employment situation for September. We'll

be watching the numbers for a snapshot of the economy. We&rsquo;ll ask an out-of-work social worker if he's

seeing any changes in the market. We&rsquo;re also trying to track down a small business owner to see what his

or her plans are for hiring this holiday season. In most years, it's a given that there&rsquo;ll be more jobs.

But some analysts are predicting a poor season ahead.</p>
<p>And since it's so important to the economy, we're asking you,<strong> Are you planning to scale back your holiday spending this year?</strong></p>

<p><b>ALSO TOMORROW:</b></p>
<p><strong>Weekend movies: tough choices</strong><br /> There's an abundance of new movies out this weekend, so

we decided we'd do a lightning round of all the best ones. <em>New York Times</em> film critic, Tony Scott and

<em>Newsday's</em> Rafer Guzman size up new offerings from the Cohen Brothers, Drew Barrymore and Ricky

Gervais.</p>

<p><b>RESPONSES FROM TODAY:</b></p>
<p>We're still getting responses on a hot topic of the week: driving while distracted. The Obama administration is proposing new laws to address the almost 6,000 deaths connected to distracted driving last year. Listeners are offering their own solutions:</p>
<p><em>&ldquo; There is an application for BlackBerry users called "Color ID" which flashes a sequence of colors.

I use this for important individuals who send messages. If it is cyan and purple I know I need to check the

message right away and look for a safe place to do so. Otherwise, the message is disregarded. Just a little help

for those important messages.&rdquo;</em><br /> <strong>--Anthony from Watchung, New Jersey, via

email</strong></p>
<p><em>&ldquo; The solution is simple: mandate the installation of cell phone jammers in all cars that activate

when the car is engaged and turn off when the car is in park. Then people still can use their phones in an

emergency or if they pull over, but not when they could be in motion. It's clear that people just will NOT be

responsible on their own. We need a sledgehammer for this problem. Vanity and ego are bottomless and peer

pressure isn't gonna do the trick.&rdquo;</em><br /><strong>--Rebecca, via email</strong></p>

<p><strong>Peter Galbraith, recently-dismissed U.N. envoy to Afghanistan, on the circumstances surrounding his

sudden recall from Kabul:</strong> <br /> (<a

target="_blank">Listen</a>)<br /> "<em>The position that I took has nothing to do with whether Hamid Karzai or

somebody else should be president of Afghanistan. It is much more basic, which is that the people of Afghanistan

voted on the 20th of August -- in parts of the country they took considerable personal risk to go vote -- and

they deserve to have their votes counted honestly, and the results not be marred by the inclusion of well over a

million fraudulent votes."</em></p>
