SuperFreakonomics: Questioning Football Helmets

Friday, November 20, 2009

This year’s football season … full of exciting games and undefeated teams ... is also unfolding amidst concerns over head injuries to players. But what would happen if the helmets meant to protect players' heads were removed from the game? "SuperFreakonomics" co-author Stephen Dubner reports on the surprising outcomes, with safeguards and incentives included, of course.

Click through to watch a video of Cal's electric tailback Jahvid Best, who was diagnosed with a concussion after taking a serious fall earlier this month.

The story doesn't even mention the point system.

As is so often the case, when it comes to the "general media" reporting on motorsports, they don't have a clue.

Cheers!

I think this is the story that Stephen Dubner is referring to, although I would never claim to speak for him.

Your guest, Stephen Dubner, made a statement this morning to the extent that "NASCAR changed their point system to encourage drivers not to crash" (for safety reasons).

Really?

Could he document that?

I've been a motorsports journalist and broadcaster for some 40 years and I think that a story of this magnitude would have been noticed prior to Mr. Dubner's shocking revalation on your program today.

When I hear something that blatantly inaccurate (about something I know well) on The Takeaway, it makes me wonder if I can trust your reporting on things I'm not familiar with.
