Stephen Dubner has it backwards. Layoffs in one industry do not insure that bright people will go out and solve problems in other industries. People, creative or not, find work where it is available and find out how to make money in those industries. If you are out of work you will go where the money is - that could be green industries, could be selling Melamine. And creativity is not necessarily good - just look at financial services these days.
