What President-elect Obama needs to know about water

Monday, December 22, 2008

With a fixed amount of water on earth, a growing population means the competition for water is increasing.
Americans are using less water now than they were 30 years ago. Yet, there never seems to be enough to go around. One billion people worldwide are without safe access to drinking water. What role can President-elect Obama play in alleviating the world's global water crisis? Peter H. Gleick, an acknowledged water authority and president of the non-partisan research group, The Pacific Institute, offers some suggestions.

Water use & economic growth, 1900-2000. Most withdrawn water is used for thermoelectric power. (Solid: U.S. gross national product in trillions of 1996$; dashed: total water withdrawal, km3/yr)

You guys missed a critical point. By increasing our funding in the global water crisis, we will at the same time by fighting disease, decreasing infant morality rates, increasing maternal survival rates, and so much more! This could be the gateway to ending so much more than just the water crisis!
